I know I have a blanket “spoiler alert” but there are definitely spoilers in this post. In this film, a mother and her Two children have recently lost the father of the family. The mother is falling into a deep depression and the son and daughter are doing their best to keep going. Before the father‘s death, the family had purchased a farmhouse that needed fixing up. On the particular day of the movie the power is out, cell phones are dead, and a woman in a black dress with a black veil shows up in the yard sitting on a chair.
The mother goes out into the yard to talk to the woman and is disturbed by her words. Throughout the day, the woman gets closer and closer to the house and her shadow is able to move things within the house. As night falls she’s able to get into the house and she traps the family in the attic. The kids are able to get away and the mom is going to face the woman by herself.
The woman tells the mom that she called her and that’s why she came. In reality, the woman is actually the personification of the mother‘s depression. In her depression, she tried to kill her children. The imagery used with the shadows, and the woman shrouded in darkness was fantastic. I think that this movie is a marvelous representation of what depression and grief are really like. They can be a true horror.
